option one. the invitation you turned down without really thinking
it arrived at a bad moment and you said no before you had considered it, and then felt a small drop about ten minutes later.
the useful question is what the no was actually about. tiredness is the reason we give and it is very rarely the whole story. more often it is the getting ready, the small performance of being fine in company, the effort of the first twenty minutes in the room. that is worth naming, because it has a workaround. the workaround is arriving late and leaving early rather than not going at all. nobody minds. most people do not even notice.
option two. the sunday that turns at four
fine until then. and then the week walks into the room and the whole afternoon goes strange on you.
the hour is the useful piece of information there. most of us take that mood as a verdict on our life, when it behaves much more like weather with a timetable. anything that reliable can be planned around. something with a start time at half past four does more than any amount of talking yourself out of the feeling, because the feeling is not really arguing with you. it is filling a space, and a space can be filled with something else.
option three. the meal you did not really make
toast standing up at the counter. the same few things on rotation. cooking properly for one feels like more trouble than it is worth when there is nobody to notice either way.
the noticing is the part worth questioning. eating well in front of nobody is not a waste of an evening, it is the clearest message you can send yourself about whether you count when there is no audience for it. once a week is plenty. lay it properly and sit down with it. a great many women find that single meal does more for the week than a whole list of intentions, and the reason is that it is the only thing on the list nobody else benefits from.
