this is a common situation rather than one woman, and it turns up in different clothes all the time. her grown child comes for lunch. it is pleasant. they eat, they talk about the car, the weather, somebody's new job. then they leave, on time, and she stands in the kitchen afterwards with a feeling she cannot name and no complaint she could make out loud.
nothing went wrong. that is the part that confuses her. she has nothing to point at, so she concludes the problem must be her.
the page of cups. this one carries news arriving in fragments. what it means for her is that she is being given headlines rather than the story, and headlines are what people offer when they are being polite. it is not secrecy. it is a habit of updating a parent instead of talking to one.
the six of pentacles. this carries the direction things flow in. for her, the visits still run on the old arrangement, where she gives and they receive, and neither of them has noticed that the arrangement is what keeps the conversation shallow. nobody confides in someone who is on duty.
the four of wands. this carries what a home is for. what it means here is that the house has quietly become a place they visit rather than one they belong to, and that is ordinary and permanent and not a failure. what changes it is not more hosting. it is having something of her own going on in the house when they arrive.
the thing i would say to her, if she asked, is that the flat feeling after a good visit is not evidence of a bad relationship. it is the gap between two people who love each other and are still using an old script for it. scripts can be changed by one person, and it is usually whichever of them thinks about it more. which is how you can tell it will be her.
