TUESDAY, AUGUST 25

/ pick one

three cards, and one of them holds the reason you have not put anything down

left, middle, right. take the one that pulls before you have thought about it, and keep it with you. your reading waits at the bottom, underneath today's card, which means a scroll. that is the arrangement.

most women in this position already know which task they could hand over. what stops them is never the task. it is a belief sitting underneath it, usually one they have never said out loud, and the three below are the ones i hear most.

choose one, then scroll

TODAY'S CARD

TEN OF WANDS

X

today's energy is about the size of the load rather than how tired you are. ten of wands sits with the woman who is still upright and carrying considerably more than she agreed to.

the mechanism is worth understanding, because nobody set out to do this to you. competence gets rewarded with more work. that is all. you handled something well, so the next one came to you, and after twenty five years of handling things well you are carrying the load of three people and everybody involved thinks the arrangement is normal, yourself included.

tuesday is when it shows. the week is properly underway, and by the afternoon you are working from a list you did not write and cannot remember agreeing to. late august adds to it, with the autumn arrangements starting to land and everyone assuming you are the one keeping the calendar.

the encouraging part is that a load built one piece at a time can come apart the same way. you do not need to renegotiate your whole life this week. one item, handed over properly and left alone afterwards, changes the assumption more than any conversation about fairness ever will.

what is worth leaning into today: writing the list down. all of it, including the invisible items nobody would call tasks. seeing the length of it in your own handwriting does something that complaining about it does not.

what is worth staying away from: taking something back the moment it is done imperfectly. that is the exact point where the load returns, and it returns with the belief that it was always going to.

my advice for today: pick the smallest thing on the list that somebody else could do badly without consequence. give that one away first. the practice matters more than the saving.

i want to know the invisible item on your list, the one that would not appear on anybody's rota. write and tell me what it is, because those are the ones that never get counted anywhere.

option one. the five of pentacles

your belief is that it all comes apart without you. and there is real evidence behind it, because at some point in your life something did come apart when you were not holding it, and you have been paying the premium on that insurance ever since.

the belief is not stupid, it is just out of date. test it somewhere the stakes are genuinely low, and watch what happens over a fortnight rather than an afternoon. things wobble and then settle, most of the time, and knowing that is worth more than another year of holding everything steady.

option two. the seven of wands

your belief is that asking counts as failing. so you do not ask, and because you do not ask, nobody knows there is anything to help with, and the silence gets read by you as proof that nobody would.

that loop can only be broken from your end, which is annoying but also useful, because it means you are not waiting on anyone. ask for something small and unambiguous this week. not help in general. one specific thing, with a day attached to it.

option three. the knight of pentacles

your belief is that it only counts if it is done properly, and properly means the way you do it. so handing anything over creates more work than keeping it, which is often true in the first fortnight and almost never true by the third month.

the question worth sitting with is what the high standard is protecting. quite often it is not the outcome at all, it is the identity of being the one who does things properly, which is a decent identity and an expensive one. you can keep it in the places where it matters and let it go in the places where nobody is looking.
