three of them today, and no thinking about it. take the one your eye stopped on first.

one. the friend who went quiet. two. the group you are in and not quite in. three. the person who only ever gets the good version of you.

THREE OF CUPS

III

the three of cups is company, and it comes up most often for women who have plenty of people around them and still feel slightly unmet. those two things sit together far more comfortably than anyone admits.

there is a difference between being included and being known. you can be on every list, at every lunch, and still be doing the version of yourself that is easy to have around.

that version is not a lie. it is efficient. it took years to build and it works, and the cost of it is that people answer the version rather than you, and then you wonder why the company does not quite land.

tuesday is a good day to spend a little less of it. not a confession, nothing heavy. one true sentence in a conversation where you would normally hand over the smooth one. that is usually enough to change how a week feels.

what is worth leaning into today: being slightly more specific than usual when somebody asks how you are. specific is what makes a person recognisable.

what is worth staying away from: auditing your friendships for who has earned you. the ledger feels like clarity and it mostly produces distance.

my advice for today: pick one person and tell them one thing you would ordinarily edit out. small scale. the aim is to be met once this week, not to be understood completely.

who did you think of just then. you can send me the name and nothing else.

option one. the friend who went quiet

nobody decided anything. she got busy, you got busy, and the gap grew long enough that reaching across it began to feel like a large gesture rather than a small one.

that is the trap, and it is nearly always mutual. she is on her side of the same gap thinking the same thing. the way through is to be entirely unremarkable about it. no apology for the silence, no accounting for the months, one message about something ordinary as though no time had passed. from her side the relief is identical to yours.

option two. the group you are in and not quite in

you are invited, you go, you like them, and you come home feeling oddly unaccompanied.

this is worth naming properly. a group hands you belonging, which is real, and it very rarely hands you being known, which is a different need and takes one person rather than five. so stop asking the group for the second thing. take one of them for coffee separately. a great many close friendships in a woman's life started as somebody she peeled off from a larger table.

option three. the person who only gets the good version

they get the manageable you. cheerful, capable, no trouble at all. and you have probably filed that under good manners, or kindness, or not wanting to be a burden.

here is the part worth sitting with. the good version cannot really be loved, because it is not the one that is there. and the people who have earned the other one are usually waiting, mildly puzzled about why you keep them at that distance. you do not have to hand over everything at once. one honest sentence tests the water and costs almost nothing.
