TODAY'S CARD

SEVEN OF PENTACLES

VII

you are waiting on something. a decision somebody else is making, a result, or just whether the thing you have been quietly building turns into anything at all.

the seven of pentacles sits in exactly that gap. it is the card of work already done and not yet answered, and the discomfort it describes is not doubt about the work. it is having nothing left to do about it today.

monday makes the waiting louder. the week opens, everybody else appears to be moving, and stillness starts to feel like a personal failing rather than a stage of something.

here is the honest version. i cannot tell you the waiting ends the way you want, and anyone who tells you that is guessing. what i can tell you is that waiting well and waiting badly cost very different amounts, and the difference is almost entirely in how often you check.

what is worth leaning into today: the parts of this that are still yours to do. there are usually one or two, and they are usually smaller and duller than the thing you are waiting for.

what is worth staying away from: checking. the refresh, the inbox, the phone turned face up on the table. checking shortens nothing and it spends the whole day.

my advice for today: give the waiting a boundary today. decide when you will next think about it properly, put that somewhere, and let the hours in between belong to something else. an unbounded wait takes up the entire week.

what are you waiting on. one line is enough, and you do not have to tell me what you are hoping for.

/ a reflection

on the difference between still and stuck

i have been thinking about how badly we read our own pauses. from the inside, a stretch of not-yet feels identical to a stretch of going-nowhere, and there is no instrument that tells you which one you are in.

so we borrow other people as the instrument, which is where it goes wrong. she has moved house, she has retrained and has a plan for october. none of that tells you anything about your own timing, and all of it makes you feel behind.

the only test i trust is a plain one. is something still being built, even slowly, even invisibly. if it is, then you are still rather than stuck. if genuinely nothing is being built and you have been calling that patience, that is worth knowing too, and it is not a moral failing, it is information you can act on.

and there is a third possibility we tend to skip. sometimes nothing is being built because you are tired, and the honest name for that is rest rather than either of the other two.

i cannot tell you which of the three you are in. you probably can, and you have probably known for a while.

if you can name which of those you are in, tell me. i am curious how often the answer turns out to be the third one.
