/ pick one
three cards, and one of them knows how yours went quiet
left, middle, right, chosen fast. hold it while you read. your reading is right at the bottom, under today's card, so there is a scroll between you and it.
most of us have one. a woman we were close to, who we are now perfectly friendly with and no longer know. the useful thing is that these fade in quite different ways, and what you would do about it depends entirely on which way yours went.

TODAY'S CARD
THREE OF CUPS
III
today's energy is about being known by somebody, which is a different thing from being liked or being included. three of cups sits with the friendships that once did that job, and with what happens when one of them stops.
the thing nobody prepares you for is that adult friendships rarely end. they thin. there is no argument to point at and no moment you could name, which is why it takes years to notice, and why you feel faintly ridiculous being sad about it.
worth saying plainly: most of these went quiet for logistical reasons rather than emotional ones. one of you moved, someone's mother got ill, a job changed shifts. proximity was doing more of the work than either of you realised, and when it went there was nothing underneath it except goodwill, which is lovely and does not organise a lunch.
which means the situation is more workable than it feels. a thinning is not a verdict on how interesting you are. it is an absence of occasions, and occasions can be made by one person, awkwardly, with a message that admits it has been ages.
what is worth leaning into today: being the one who goes first. it costs almost nothing and it is the only move available, since she is sitting at home assuming the same things about you.
what is worth staying away from: the apology preamble. two paragraphs explaining why you have not been in touch turns a warm message into a small confession and makes it harder to answer.
my advice for today: send something specific rather than something warm. a date, a place, a thing you saw that reminded you of her. warmth is hard to reply to and a wednesday in september is not.
i would like to know her name, or just how long it has been. it is a strange comfort to see how many of us are sitting on the same unsent message, and i think it helps to hear the number.

option one. the four of cups
yours went quiet through inattention on both sides. a few messages went unanswered in a busy month, then answering felt like it needed an explanation, and the explanation felt like too much effort for a tuesday. nobody chose this.
this kind restarts more easily than any of the others, and it restarts best with no reference to the gap at all. send the thing you would have sent five years ago. the silliest possible message, no context. she will be relieved that neither of you has to do the reckoning.
option two. the five of swords
something was actually said. small enough that raising it would have looked petty, large enough that it never quite dissolved, and both of you have been polite about it ever since. the politeness is the injury, in a way, because it is what replaced the ease.
you have a genuine choice here and both directions are respectable. you can name it, briefly, without a case attached, and see what she does. or you can decide privately that it is finished and stop paying attention to the ache of it. what does not work is the current arrangement, where you carry it and she does not know it exists.
option three. the six of swords
yours went quiet because you became different people, which is allowed and which nobody says out loud. the conversations got harder to have, not because either of you got worse, but because the overlap shrank until there was only the past left to talk about.
it is worth letting this one be finished properly rather than half open. a friendship that gave you ten good years did its work. you can be grateful for it and stop auditioning it for a second act, and the room that frees up tends to get filled faster than anybody expects at our age.
