this one comes up often. two women who were close for years, no argument, nothing said, and a gap that has now grown long enough that getting in touch feels like it would need an explanation.
when it gets read, it tends to move through three positions.
the eight of swords. the sense of having no available move. what it carries is a set of rules nobody actually imposed, about how long is too long and how it would look to reach out this late. for her it means the obstacle is a story about etiquette rather than an actual closed door.
the two of swords. the long consideration. what it carries is that she has turned this over many times already and turning it over has produced nothing. for her it means more thinking will not supply the thing that is missing, which is a first line.
the page of cups. the small specific message. what it carries is the one memory nobody else in the world would understand. for her it means she already has what to send, and it is far shorter than the paragraph she has been composing in her head.
put together they say something fairly ordinary. a long gap is not evidence about what you meant to each other, it is evidence that two people got busy in the same years. one specific memory, sent with no preamble and no apology for the silence, reopens more of these than any carefully worded explanation ever has.
