TODAY'S CARD
THE HERMIT
IX
|
|
|
the hermit is the card of going quiet on purpose, and it turns up on a wednesday, the day the week sags in the middle and the evenings are already drawing in by six.
living alone, or living as if alone inside a busy house, has two faces. there is the evening that feels too long, and there is the evening where nobody needs anything and your head finally clears.
something happens in that second kind of quiet. old memories come up without being called. a summer from your twenties, the friends you drove to the coast with, a version of you who had opinions about everything. the mind gets a chance to sort itself, the way a drawer does when you finally take everything out.
this card treats solitude as the place where you get your own thoughts back. the loneliness is real too, and it tends to soften once the time alone has something of yours in it.

what is worth leaning into today: one stretch of the evening that belongs only to you. the book on the nightstand, a walk, a record, the memory you have been meaning to sit with.
what is worth staying away from: treating time alone as a waiting room until someone else fills it. you are company too.
my advice for today: tonight, put the phone in another room for an hour and see what your mind does when nothing is pulling at it. notice what it brings back.

when did your head last feel truly clear. tell me where you were, if you remember.

I can’t stay silent about this anymore...
For the past few days, I’ve received some rather worrying complaints from a few of my readers…
My long-time reader, Shannon, said she felt uneasy when she remembered all of the beach trips she took with her girlfriends in her 20s.
Another, Wendy, said she wasn’t sure what to do when she felt alert, clear-headed, and ready for the day one morning.
And finally, Ginny, said she felt ‘lost’ when she finished the book that had been sitting on her nightstand for months in only eight days.
I take complaints like this very seriously.
Like my father always told me, “Win like a man, lose like a man.”

|
/ my own company is worth keeping
/ a quiet evening can be a full one
/ my mind clears when i give it room
/ the woman i was at twenty-five is still in here
/ i can finish what i start, at my own pace
/ i am allowed to enjoy the house when it is mine
/ what comes back to me in the quiet is mine to keep
