TODAY'S CARD

THE HIEROPHANT

V

the hierophant is the card of the rules you were handed, and it turns up on a monday in october, which is about as good a moment as any to notice how many of them you are still following.

most of us were given a version of who to be fairly early. the reliable one, the sensible one, the one who does not make a fuss. it made sense at the time. it may even have kept things running for decades.

what this card points at is the quiet gap that opens later, when the role keeps going after the reason for it has gone. you still answer to a description somebody wrote for you at twenty-five, and some days it fits like a coat from another winter.

none of that means the years were wasted or that the person you became is a mistake. it means some of the rules were borrowed, and borrowed things can be looked at, kept or handed back.

what is worth leaning into today: noticing one rule you follow that you never actually chose, and naming whose voice it is in.

what is worth staying away from: the monday urge to throw the whole self out and start again by friday. who you are does not change on a deadline.

my advice for today: write down one sentence that begins i am the kind of person who. then ask whether it is still true, or only still familiar.

what is one rule about who you are supposed to be that you are not sure you still believe. you can reply with just the rule.

/ a reflection

the version of you other people still expect

here is what i keep turning over. you can change quite a lot inside yourself and still walk into a room where everyone treats you as the person you were.

family is the obvious place. a sister who still calls you the organised one, a phrase about you that has been in circulation for thirty years and gets brought out at every birthday.

and it is very easy to slip back into that version for an evening, because it is what the room expects and it costs less than explaining. then you drive home feeling slightly out of focus, as though you had spent the night in your own old clothes.

i do not think there is a neat answer to this. some people are glad to meet the newer you, some take a while, and a few never quite manage it. i would only wonder which room you shrink in, and whether there is one small thing you could let them see next time.

where do you still turn back into the old version of yourself. i would like to know which room it is.
