TUESDAY, AUGUST 18

/ pick one

three cards, and one of them is the part you are still playing after the audience changed

left, middle, right. take the one that pulls before you have a reason, and keep hold of it. your reading sits at the bottom, underneath today's card, so you will pass everything else on the way. that is deliberate.

there is a difference between who you are and the job you took on inside a family, a workplace, a group of friends. the job was usually assigned early, often by someone who is no longer in the room, and most women keep doing it long after anybody is asking.

TODAY'S CARD

THE HIEROPHANT

V

today's energy is about the rules you did not write. tuesday is a good day for this, because it is when the week's habits close over and you find yourself doing things in an order you never actually chose.

the hierophant carries the inherited instruction. how a woman behaves at a table. what is worth spending money on and what is a waste. when it is acceptable to be tired. who apologises first. none of it arrived as an argument you could examine, so none of it ever got tested.

the gap that opens by your fifties is between the woman those rules were designed for and the one who has actually lived. some of them still serve you, and there is no prize for throwing out a rule that works. others are doing nothing except costing you something small every week.

so the work today is not rebellion. it is sorting. an inherited rule you have looked at and decided to keep becomes yours, and that changes how it feels to follow it.

what is worth leaning into today: catching one should as it goes past and asking who taught it to you. the ones with a face attached tend to loosen immediately.

what is worth staying away from: announcing a whole new self by friday. identity does not change by declaration, and a dramatic overhaul usually collapses back into the old rules within a fortnight.

my advice for today: break one very small inherited rule on purpose. eat the thing at the wrong time of day. leave the bed unmade until evening. it is a test of whether the sky falls, and it does not.

i would like to hear the small rule you broke, and whose voice objected. those replies are usually very funny and rarely about anything larger than a teacup.

option one. the four of wands

your part is the one who holds it together. birthdays get remembered because you remember them. people stay in touch through you. it started as a genuine talent and somewhere along the way it became a post you cannot resign from.

the thing to know is that the role has convinced you it is you. it is not. it is something you are good at. try letting one small arrangement go unarranged this month and watch what happens. either somebody else picks it up, which tells you something, or it turns out not to have mattered, which tells you more.

option two. the two of swords

your part is the easy one. no strong preferences, happy with whatever, glad to fit in. it was an intelligent strategy in a house where having an opinion had a cost, and it kept the peace for years.

what it costs now is that people cannot find you. they are not withholding, they simply have nothing to aim at. you do not owe anyone a personality overhaul. you could start with the restaurant. say the one you actually want and let the sentence sit there without softening it.

option three. the eight of wands

your part is the capable one. the one who copes, who gets it sorted, who is rung up when something has gone wrong. it earned you real respect and it also quietly disqualified you from being looked after.

nobody demoted you from being cared for. capability just reads as not needing it, and people believe what they are shown. the move here is not to collapse in order to prove otherwise. it is to accept one offer of help this week that you would normally wave away, badly and awkwardly, without making a joke of it.
