TODAY'S CARD

SEVEN OF WANDS

VII

the seven of wands is the card of holding your ground, and it turns up on a monday, which is when a lot of us pick the guard back up before we have even got out of bed.

this comes up often. a tiredness that sleep does not touch, and when you look at it closely it is less about what you did and more about how braced you were while doing it. listening for the phone, checking the tone of an email twice, staying ready for whatever might need handling next.

being on guard all day costs as much as the work itself, sometimes more. and because nothing visible happens, nobody counts it, including you. you finish a quiet weekend and still feel as though you have been standing in a doorway holding something shut.

this card sees that effort for what it is. some of what you are holding back may be real and worth holding. some of it may be a habit from a harder season that kept going after the season ended.

what is worth leaning into today: noticing one moment today when you can let your shoulders drop, because nothing in that moment actually needs defending.

what is worth staying away from: treating the week ahead as a list of things that might go wrong. bracing early does not make them any easier when they come.

my advice for today: pick one thing you normally check or guard and leave it alone until the afternoon. see what happens. most of the time, nothing does.

what are you braced for this week. you can tell me in one line.

/ a reflection

the rest that only counts once you have earned it

here is what i keep turning over. a lot of us only let ourselves rest once something has gone wrong. a cold or a bad back, a week that falls apart. then rest has an excuse and nobody can argue with it.

which means rest gets filed as recovery. something you do to get back to working order, quickly, so you can carry on. a sofa afternoon on a perfectly ordinary day still feels faintly like cheating.

and so the tiredness builds in the gaps between the excuses. you are not ill, so you keep going, and you keep going until you are.

i will not tell you how much rest you are owed, because i do not think it works like a bank account. i would only wonder what you would do with an hour that did not have to be justified, and whether you could take one before anything forces it on you.

what would you do with an hour that nobody, including you, asked you to explain. i would like to know.
