THURSDAY, 1 OCTOBER

/ pick an option

pick one before the card, it works better that way

three below. take the one that moved your stomach, not the one that sounds sensible when you say it.

one. the thing you are waiting to hear about. two. the decision that is not yours to make. three. the plan you have paused until you know.

keep hold of it. the card first, your answer sits at the bottom.

TODAY'S CARD

WHEEL OF FORTUNE

X

the wheel of fortune is the card of the part you do not get a vote on, and it turns up in the middle of a wait.

october opens with something unresolved for a great many people. the result, the scan, the offer, the answer somebody else is taking their time over. and waiting has a particular quality to it, because there is nowhere to put the energy it generates.

so the energy goes somewhere anyway. usually into checking, or into rehearsing both outcomes in detail, or into a kind of hovering where nothing else gets started in case the answer changes everything. i am not going to tell you it will land the way you want. i do not know, and neither does anybody who tells you they do.

what is worth separating out is the waiting from the stalling. the wait is real and it is not yours to hurry. the stalling is the rest of your life put on hold beside it, and that part is yours, and taking it back costs you nothing at all if the news turns out to be good.

what is worth leaning into today: keeping one part of your week completely unrelated to the thing you are waiting on.

what is worth staying away from: rehearsing the bad version in detail. you will handle it if it arrives, and the rehearsal adds nothing to that.

my advice for today: name one thing you have postponed until you know, and do a small version of it this week anyway. not as a superstition. as a way of keeping a life running while a question is open.

what are you waiting on at the moment. no advice from me, i would just like to know what you are carrying this week.

option one. the thing you are waiting to hear about

a result, a decision, a reply. the phone is in your hand more than usual and you know exactly how many days it has been.

the checking is the part worth looking at, because it is the one piece of this you can actually adjust. checking moves nothing, and it keeps the wait at the front of your mind all day instead of the back of it. try a window: once in the morning, once in the evening, and the hours in between belong to you. that changes nothing about the outcome and a great deal about how the days feel while you wait for it.

option two. the decision that is not yours to make

somebody else is deciding something that lands squarely on your life. where they live, whether they come, what they do next.

there is a particular helplessness in that, and it is worth naming rather than managing. what tends to help is getting clear on what you would say if you got one sentence, and then choosing whether to say it. either choice is fine. staying quiet because you decided to is a completely different experience from staying quiet because you did not think you were allowed to speak.

option three. the plan you have paused until you know

the holiday, the course, the room, the thing you would start if only the other thing were settled.

some of it genuinely does depend on the answer. quite a lot of it does not, and it got paused because pausing felt like the responsible thing to do while something important was in the air. worth separating those two lists honestly, on paper. whatever sits on the does-not-depend side can begin now, and beginning it is not tempting fate. it is a woman with a life carrying on while she waits, which is what everybody who has ever waited well has done.
