TUESDAY, AUGUST 11

/ pick one

three cards are face down, and one of them is about what is keeping you here

left, middle, right. pick the one that pulls before you have a reason for it, and hold it while you read the rest. the reading for your card is at the bottom, underneath today's card, so you will have to scroll past everything to get to it. that is on purpose.

the question underneath all three is not whether to go. it is what you are being loyal to by staying, because it is almost never the thing you would name first.

choose one, then scroll

TODAY'S CARD

EIGHT OF CUPS

VIII

today has the shape of a decision you have already made and have not said out loud. tuesday tends to bring those to the surface, because monday's dread has burned off and there is nothing left to hide behind.

eight of cups sits with leaving. rarely the dramatic sort. usually the ordinary sort, where something stopped being yours a while ago and you keep turning up out of decency, or habit, or because leaving would require an explanation you do not feel like giving.

the hard part of standing in a doorway is that it pays you nothing. you get no relief for having decided and no comfort from having stayed. that flat, stalled feeling is the doorway itself, and it is worth telling apart from the feeling of having chosen wrong. they are not the same and they do not last the same length of time.

august is useful for this in a way i did not expect. the year is far enough along that the plan of starting in january quietly stops convincing anybody, including the woman who made it.

what is worth leaning into today: saying the thing to one person you trust, in plain words, with no plan attached to it. a decision spoken once behaves differently than one kept in your head.

what is worth staying away from: trying to do the whole leaving before dinner. thresholds punish speed, and a rushed exit usually gets rebuilt within a month.

my advice for today: write down what you would lose that you would actually miss. keep the list honest and short. most of what holds us in a doorway does not survive being written down.

tell me which one you picked before you read any of them, and whether it landed anywhere near. i find the wrong answers as interesting as the right ones.

option one. the two of wands

you are further along than you give yourself credit for. what you are calling indecision is mostly a lack of witnesses. nobody has told you the plan sounds reasonable, so you keep treating it as a daydream.

what you are being loyal to is the idea that a plan needs approval before it counts. it does not. one practical step this week, small enough to do without announcing it, will tell you more than another month of thinking.

option two. the queen of swords

the decision is done. the conversation is what is missing, and you have been rehearsing it in the car for weeks. what keeps it unsaid is not fear of the answer. it is that you would rather be thought of as easy to get along with than as a woman who wanted something.

you can be both, though not on the same afternoon. pick the sentence you would say if you had to keep it to one, and let the rest go unsaid. clarity travels better short.

option three. the six of swords

the leaving already started, quietly, some months ago. you have been withdrawing in small amounts and calling it being busy. that is not dishonesty, it is how most people manage a change they have not got words for yet.

what you are loyal to here is the version of yourself who never left anything. she was loyal to people who did not always return it. you can retire her without deciding she was foolish, and the quiet part of this is nearly finished anyway.
