TODAY'S CARD

ACE OF PENTACLES

I

the ace of pentacles is the card of the small opening, and on a saturday it asks a question that is a good deal easier to answer than the big one.

the big question is whether you are going to be all right, and nobody can settle that on a saturday morning in october. it sits there regardless, usually at its loudest when the week stops and there is nothing left to drown it out.

the smaller question is what one concrete thing could be true by christmas that is not true now. an amount moved somewhere harder to reach. a bill actually looked at. a conversation with somebody who understands more about this than you do.

worry and action feel nearly identical from the inside. they use the same energy and only one of them changes the number. the point of a small opening is that it is small enough to be done today, which is more than the big question has ever managed.

what is worth leaning into today: one concrete piece of admin you have been putting off. the smallest one on the list.

what is worth staying away from: opening the whole picture on a saturday morning with nowhere to take it. that is worry wearing the clothes of responsibility.

my advice for today: do the twenty minute version. one statement opened, one figure written down, one standing order cancelled. twenty minutes, then close it and have the rest of your saturday back.

what is the piece of money admin you keep not doing. naming it out loud is most of the job.

/ affirmations

read these out loud, five times, in front of a mirror, right now

/ i am allowed to not understand something and ask about it

/ being behind where i expected to be is not a character flaw

/ i can look at a number without letting it decide my whole day

/ i know more about this than i give myself credit for

/ asking a question about money is not an admission of anything

/ i have handled harder things than a bank statement

/ i am the person who deals with this now, and i can learn it

which line did you skip over. that one is worth saying a second time.
