TODAY'S CARD

THE EMPRESS

III

the empress is the card of the one who provides, and on a saturday she asks a question most of us have never actually sat down with. what were you before you were useful.

the providing was real work and it went on for decades. and then the volume drops. they are grown, the calls get shorter, the house has a different sound to it on a saturday morning and nobody rings until sunday.

the usual reading of that is that you are wanted less. the more accurate one is that the job changed shape with no handover meeting. love outlasting closeness is the ordinary condition of a family with adult children in it, and from the inside it looks exactly like neglect while being nothing of the kind.

saturday is the day the house tells you the truth about this. the quiet is real. so is the fact that you now hold hours belonging to nobody, and those hours were paid for with the other thirty years. they are yours to spend badly if you want to.

what is worth leaning into today: making the day about something you chose rather than about who has not rung.

what is worth staying away from: keeping score of contact. the count never comes out well and it changes nothing at either end of the phone.

my advice for today: do one thing today that belongs to you and not to anybody's memory of you. it can be very small. it only has to be yours.

what did you like doing before there were people to look after. i am after the specific thing, not the category it belongs to.

/ affirmations

read these out loud, five times, in front of a mirror, right now

/ i can want to hear from them without that being a complaint

/ asking for a phone call is not the same as begging for one

/ i am allowed needs i did not have when they were small

/ being needed less is not the same as being loved less

/ i do not have to earn my place in anybody's week

/ i can build a saturday that does not depend on the phone

/ i was a person before i was needed, and i still am

which of those was hardest to say out loud. that one usually has the most in it.
